In the first game of the night it was Penn Yan the 5-2 winner in a close game with Honeoye Falls-Lima for the combined B/C Championship.  

As the results of a small number of Class B schools in the Section this year, the Section Five Executive Committee ruled that there would be a combined tournament this year. Next year, Sectional Five will return to three tournaments as a result of increased enrollments.
  
The "NCAA" type design of this year's B/C tournament determined that all of the Class B teams would play against each other, as would the Class C teams and that the winners would play for the B/C championship. As a result, Both Penn Yan and HF-L will advance to the NYS Tournament. This Championship game was more for bragging rights than the Class A Championship which determined who would continue playing in the NYS Tournament.
  
In a game that featured tight defense the Mustangs shutout the Cougars in the first half and, in fact, it took over twenty-four before HF-L scored its first goal. After almost ten minutes of scoreless play, Penn Yan's junior attackman Dan McGuffie scored at 2:11 on a pass from Jon Van Houten (who was named the tournament's MVP). The Mustangs led at the end of the quarter 1-0.
  
Penn Yan scored the only goal of the second quarter at 1:52 when junior middie Dan Mesler scored on a feed from senior attackman Mark Kratochvil and ended the half with the Mustangs up 2-0.
  
Many spectators saw the low scoring game as unexciting, but the defensive play by both teams kept the shots on goal to a minimum. Sophomore goalie RJ Wickham, who was named to the All Tournament team, made a number of critical saves for the halftime shutout. Sophomore defenseman Michael Manley who also made the All Tournament team had a number of key takeaways and was instrumental in the Penn Yan clears. Junior defenseman Tristan Keas who spent a great deal of time controlling the Cougar's leading attackman, Mike Cintineo was also named to the All Tournament team. HF-L defensive players Connor Burgasser and Dusty Mulcahey who often played against Penn Yan's All American Jon Van Houten were named to the All Tournament team.
  
Shortly after the end of the halftime break Penn Yan extended their lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal by Van Houten. HF-L's first goal was scored by Mike Cintineo at 7:28 (unassisted). The Mustangs answered at 4:14 with a goal by Steven Carlson on a feed from Van Houten and the third quarter ended with Penn Yan up 4-1.
  
Cintineo who also made the All Tournament team scored again for HF-L at 9:19 in the last quarter and about seven minutes later Mesler scored the last goal of the game on a pass from Carlson.
  
By game's end, five Mustangs ended up on the scorebook including Mesler (2g), Van Houten (1g-2a), Carlson (1g-1a), McGuffie (1g) and Kratochvil (1a).
 
Both goals from HF-L were from Cintineo (unassisted ).
  
Named to the B/C All Tournament Team were, from Penn Yan, Dan Mesler, Michael Manley, Tristan Keas, RJ Wickham and the MVP, Jon Van Houten. Named from HF-L were John Cintineo, Connor Burgasser, Mike Cintineo and Dusty Mulcahey. The full list is available here.
   
Both teams will need to wait for the NYS out bracket games on Saturday in order to determine when and where they will play next. Section 6 teams Amherst (B) and Salamanca (C) will play against Section 10 teams Saranac Lake (B) and Canton (C). If a Section six team wins, the winner will play the Section Five team at Aquinas. If a Section 10 team wins, the Section Five team will travel to Liverpool on Tuesday. SportsFive will post the location and times after the Saturday out bracket results have been determined.  
   
 In the Class A Championship there was far more offense and a classic demonstration by key players who refused to give up. In the end, a duel between All Americans and critical play by defensive units would give a slight advantage to Canandaigua who won 12-10 over Penfield and who will advance to the NYS Tournament and face Orchard Park for the second year in a row.

Penfield took the early lead scoring their first goal at 10:41 as Trevor Rice scored an unassisted goal. Michael Arvan scored in man up at 8:42 on a pass from Mike Thon who was named to the All Tournament team. Canandaigua returned to tie the game after goals by Dan Groot at 5:29 and Aaron Manzer at 3:07. Groot was name tournament MVP.
  
The Braves took their first lead of the game when they scored at the top of the second quarter on an unassisted goal by Groot at 10:39. Thirty second later, however the Patriots came back for a tie with a goal by Tim Pfeffer (All Tournament team selection) on an assist by Rice. Thon gave Penfield the lead at 9:57, but Chris Mulheron forced the tie at 8:50 and Nick Boylan gave CA another lead at 4:54 with his unassisted goal. Penfield came back again with a tying goal by Pfeffer (assisted by Rice) at 4:14 and then took the lead with a goal at 1:23 by Jason Knerr who completed a beautiful face dodge after receiving a pass from Rice. Canandaigua would not let up as they scored the final goal of the half when Groot scored at 1:14 to send the teams to the halftime break tied at six.
  
The second half started out much like the first. Penfield scored first (Knerr from Rice) at 9:31 and again at 9:19 (Thon alone). The Braves then came back for the tie with two goals; first at 8:20 by Groot and then Mulheron at 4:39. The see-saw continued with the Patriots scored two goals at 3:58 (Kelly McKenna from Rice) and at 3:36 (Arvan unassisted). Tyler Emery (all Tournament team) scored the last goal of the quarter for CA. The Patriots led at the end of the third quarter, 10-9.
  
The last quarter belonged to Canandaigua as they scored three goals while holding Penfield scoreless. Manzer scored first, followed by Emery with the Braves only assisted goal of the game (Groot). Groot scored the last goal of the game (unassisted) at 4:12.
  
The final scoring stats for Canandaigua included Groot (5g-1a), Manzer (2g), Mulheron (2g), Boylan (1g) and Emery (2g).
  
Scoring for Penfield were Rice (1g-3a), Arvan (2g-1a), Thon (2g-1a), Pfeffer (2g), Knerr (2g) and McKenna (1g).
  
Named to the Class A All Tournament Team were, from Canandaigua, Tyler Emery, Chris Mulheron, Ed Walsh, Dad Serafine and Dan Groot (MVP). Named from Penfield were Mike Thon, Tim Pfeffer, Jason Knerr and Luke Prattico.
  
The NYS quarter final match up for Class A is set, as there are no teams in Class A in Section 10. Canandaigua will play Orchard Park from Section 6 on Tuesday at Aquinas. The time of the game will be determined after the out bracket games in Classes B and C have been determined on Saturday. Orchard Park (19-1) lost only to Class B Champion Amherst (14-5) on April 15th. The Quakers beat Fairport by a single goal (10-9) on April 16th. In last year's quarter finals OP beat Canandaigua 9-8 before losing in the semi finals to West Genesee (Section 3) 14-6.
