Lacrosse Officials Year-End Awards

The Genesee Valley Lacrosse Officials Association closed out another successful season with its annual "Year-End Gathering," where officials were recognized for their hard work and commitment to the game. Over the course of the 77-day season, the association provided officiating services for 736 games, requiring an impressive 1,670 official Paulis and Wingassignments.

The coveted "Iron Man Award" for officiating the most games was shared by three zebras this year; John Littwitz, Christopher Roach, and Andrew Barreca who each served in thirty-four games. Ten others had at least thirst games.

The event also celebrated the contributions of seven officials who worked the New York State Tournament this year. Ryan Robinson and Dan Scarazzo were selected to work the semi-finals in Cortland and Scott Maloney was a referee in the Class C finals and Rob Cantabene, Chris Geng, Luke Pualis and Dan Scarazzo served as Chief Bench Officials in the championship games at Hobart and William Smith College.

The Section V Official of the Year Award was announced by Mike Simon, the coordinator for Section V boys lacrosse. The award, initiated by Penfield Head Coach John Schembri, is determined by the head coaches of McCabe and PaulisSection V, with nominees coming from each league. This year’s recipient was Ryan Robinson, honored for his dedication, strong work ethic, deep knowledge of the game, and commitment to mentorship. 

In addition, two Service Awards were presented. Brian Wing was honored with an Achievement Award which recognized for his efforts in all sorts of activities "that just needed to get done." President Pete McCabe also stated by message that "he has done a lot of work, to make sure we are all prepared".

A second Achievement Award was presented to assignor Rob Cantabene. Despite the many assignments, changes, weather issues, "he remained fair, consistent and thoughtful in his assignments and found opportunities for officials to grow, whether it was their first varsity game or taking a higher contest." 

With another season in the books, the Genesee Valley Lacrosse Officials Association celebrated not only the numbers and milestones but the unwavering dedication of those who ensure the game is played with integrity and respect.
