Looking Back

It was a week filled with individual milestones across the region. Geneva's Ryland Dunham reached 150 career goals on Tuesday, while a wave of players including Brighton's Austin Flaum, HF-L's Jackson Coon, Rush-Henrietta's Zachary Winner, McQuaid's Domenic Fairport at AquinasGiangreco, and HF-L's Nate Lathrop and James Sprague — all hit the 50-career goal mark at various points throughout the week. On the goalie side, Aquinas's Jake Gibson logged his 600th career save and Haverling's McLane Stermole recorded his 800th. Penfield's Brodie Joyce broke his program's all-time career assist record, while Geneva's Ryland and Jack Dunham each reached 50 career assists. Hunter Kurdziolek of Mynderse-Romulus was a standout performer, posting five goals in back-to-back games as his team earned its first win of the season.

On the team side, Pittsford remained the week's dominant force, improving to 9-0 with wins over Rush-Henrietta and Marcellus. Irondequoit delivered the most dramatic moment of the week, with Doug Velepec scoring in double overtime to edge McQuaid 9-8. McQuaid's John Burrows also came through in the clutch, scoring an overtime winner against Thomas and later posting five goals against Fayetteville-Manlius. Other highlights included Batavia-Notre Dame picking up its first win of the season and Canandaigua rallying with three fourth-quarter goals to edge Fairport. Penn Yan's Miles Ditzell led all individual scorers on Saturday with five goals in a dominant win over Ithaca.

SATURDAY - Saturday's schedule was packed with career milestones, as Pal-Mac's Jackson Dennie reached 50 career assists, Penn Yan's R-H at SchroederGreyson Hathway hit 500 career faceoff wins while ending Geneva's undefeated season 17-6, Victor's Eli Ricci also reached 500 career faceoff wins in a 9-6 win over Niskayuna, and L-A-G's Will Schweitzer scored his 50th career goal while goalie Ayden Szymanski hit 100 career saves in an 8-5 win over Brockport. On the coaching side, Spencerport's Coach Buttaro set the school record for career wins in a 16-2 win over Rush-Henrietta, Gates Chili picked up its first win of the season over Batavia-Notre Dame, and Canandaigua earned its first-ever win over Baldwinsville, while East Aurora rallied late to edge HF-L 12-11 in the day's closest game.

FRIDAY - Pittsford stayed perfect at 10-0 with a 15-4 win at Brighton as Cole Goetz hit his 50th career goal and Brighton's Tim Tourangeau recorded his 50th career assist; Fairport used ten goal-scorers to beat Aquinas 14-3 while Logan Schimmel reached 150 career saves; Thomas extended its winning streak over Hamburg to nine with a 14-7 win; and Batavia-Notre Dame beat Newfane 7-2 for their first two-win season since 2017, with both goalies picking up their first career varsity assist.

THURSDAY - Tonight's action across Section Five produced a full slate of milestones and memorable performances. Ayden Clark scored his 100th career goal in Marcus Whitman's 23-0 win over Gananda, while Jaxon Leonard's six-goal night led Churchville-Chili past Greece Storm, 10-4. Preston Jackson's seven goals powered Wayne at MynderseRush-Henrietta past Schroeder, 10-7, and Victor's Will Johnson and Irondequoit's Colin Giudice each reached the 50-goal milestone in the same game, with Victor winning 19-10. Midlakes' Carter Casper and James Sprague hit the 50-goal and 50-assist marks respectively in an 11-7 win over East United-Eastridge, and Pal-Mac's Jackson Dennie reached 50 career assists in a 20-0 shutout of Waterloo. Geneva stayed unbeaten at 7-0 with an 18-1 win over Newark, Hilton needed overtime to edge Canandaigua 12-11, and Livonia-Avon-Geneseo's Rider VanZandt hit 400 career faceoff wins in a 14-7 non-league win over Mynderse-Romulus.

WEDNESDAY - There were no games played today. 

TUESDAY - Tuesday's action was packed with milestones and big performances across the region. Bloomfield-Honeoye's Brayden Arber Lakers at Waterlooreached 100 career goals with his program on nine goals in a 17-6 win over Newark, Penfield's Griffin Banister hit 50 career goals in a 17-2 win over Greece Storm, and Wayne's Shane Coleman reached the same mark in an 8-3 win at Mynderse-Romulus. Fairport coach Mike Torrelli picked up his 275th career win in a 16-6 decision at Rush-Henrietta, Geneva stayed unbeaten at 6-0 on six goals from Ryland Dunham, and Hilton rolled past East United-Eastridge 21-3 behind four goals from Lucas Grizzanti. Waterloo earned its first win of the season 20-2 at Gananda with four first-time scorers, and Canandaigua put up 18 goals against Gates Chili with 13 different scorers and a perfect 18-for-18 at the faceoff X.

Players of the week were also announced. Honored were junior Hilton attackman Gianluca Auriuso and senior goalie  Ayden Szymanski  from Livonia-Avon-Geneseo.

MONDAY - Monday's action featured Churchville-Chili's Jaxon Leonard reaching 200 career points in an 11-0 win over Brockport, where Leiston and Marra combined for a perfect afternoon in goal and first varsity goals went to Austin Gefell Greece at Penfieldand Logan Vujanovic. Pal-Mac's Max Hill posted five goals and five assists in a 15-10 win over Kenmore West in the programs' first meeting, and LAG extended its winning streak to five with a 16-6 win at Waterloo behind four goals and two assists from Rider VanZandt and first varsity goals from Connor Duryea, Daniel Hajtmar, and Colin Molinari.

Looking Ahead

There are lots of games this week, with the largest number on Saturday (12). Many are league games and many are expected to result in mismatches this week. Let's hope there are exciting surprises. Noteworthy games include:

On Monday there are four games including Penfield at Thomas and Orchard Park at Irondequoit.

On Tuesday games include Penn Yan at Canandaigua, L-A-G at B-H, and Haverling at Mynderse-Romulus.

On Wednesday there are currently nine games scheduled. Penfield at AquinasIrondequoit is at Churchville-Chili, Hilton is at Fairport, East is at Greece, Thomas is at Spencerport, and Victor is at Pittsford.

On Thursday games include Bloomfield-Honeoye at Mynderse-Romulus and Geneva at L-A-G.

On Friday you may want to check out the Saints at Rush-Henrietta, Fairport at Spencerport, Brighton at Aquinas and Canandaigua at Penfield.

On Saturday the week wraps up with a dozen games including BVille at Victor, F-M at Pittsford, L-A-G at HFL, and Hilton at West Genesee.

Pittsford stayed unbeaten at 9-0 with a 14-8 win at Marcellus behind four goals from Avery Valenti, Canandaigua rallied with three fourth-quarter goals to edge Fairport 8-7, and McQuaid's John Burrows posted five goals in a 12-11 win over Fayetteville-Manlius. Rush-Henrietta's Zachary Winner also reached 50 career goals in a 16-6 win over Aquinas, while Penn Yan's Miles Ditzell led all scorers on the day with five goals in a 16-5 win over Ithaca.

FRIDAY - Friday's standout performances came from Penfield's Brodie Joyce, who broke the program's all-time career assist record (108) in an 11-7win over Orchard Park, and Geneva's Ryland and Jack Dunham, who each reached 50 career assists in the same game while combining for 10 goals in a 16-1 win over Essex. BH at WhitmanBatavia-Notre Dame picked up its first win of the season with an 18-3 victory over Gananda behind five goals from Trey Rodriguez and four each from Harold Mellander and Nolan Radley, while CNS handed Schroeder an 11-4 loss behind three goals from Adrian Sweeney. Mynderse-Romulus continued its strong stretch with a 9-4 win at Waterloo, with Hunter Kurdziolek posting five goals for the second straight game.

THURSDAY - McQuaid's John Burrows scored in overtime to edge Thomas 10-9 as Domenic Giangreco reached 50 career goals, while Brighton's Austin Flaum hit the same milestone with four goals in a 14-10 win at Pal-Mac. LAG's Jack Ackerman scored with 11 seconds left to edge Wayne 8-7, HF-L's Jackson Coon posted nine points in a 14-6 win over Midlakes where both Nate Lathrop and James Sprague also reached 50 career goals, and Mynderse-Romulus earned its first win behind eight goals from Hunter Kurdziolek. 

WEDNESDAY - There was just one game played today. Victor won 14-7 at Canandaigua behind six goals from Jackson Mead, three goals and two assists from Matthew Herendeen, and an 88% faceoff performance from Ricci. Zach Tortora (Spencerport) and Bear Wehrheim (Pittsford) were named Players of the Week

TUESDAY - Tuesday's biggest moment came from Irondequoit's Doug Velepec, who scored in double overtime to edge McQuaid Jesuit 9-8despite 25 saves from Jackson Paladino. Geneva's Ryland Dunham reached exactly 150 career goals in a 13-6 win over Midlakes, Pittsford stayed unbeaten at 8-0 with a 19-10 win over Rush-Henrietta behind five goals and three assists from Grant Lewis, and Brighton picked up its first all-time win over Penn Yan 12-11 behind three goals and two assists from Kiki Condon. CA at FairportAquinas's Jake Gibson recorded his 600th career save in an 11-4 win at Haverling, Schroeder's John Caricati surpassed 300 career faceoff wins in a loss to Fairport, and Hilton's Gianluca Auriuso posted seven goals in a 15-7 win over Fayetteville-Manlius in the programs' first all-time meeting. Bloomfield-Honeoye's Brayden Arber added seven goals in a 13-4 win over Waterloo, and Marcus Whitman's Tariku Blueye posted seven goals and four assists in a 17-2 win over Mynderse-Romulus. 

MONDAY - Livonia-Avon-Geneseo topped Greece Storm 11-8 Monday evening behind four goals and three assists from Will Schweitzer and one goal and four assists from Owen Schweitzer, with first varsity goals from Owen Schweitzer, Kolokouris, and Kabes and a first varsity assist from Auringer.

There are lots of games this week, with the largest numbers on Tuesday (14), Thursday (13) and Saturday (12). Noteworthy games include:

On Monday there are three games including L-A-G at Waterloo.

LAG's Jack Ackerman scored with 11 seconds left to edge Wayne 8-7, HF-L's Jackson Coon BH at Whitmanposted nine points in a 14-6 win over Midlakes where both Nate Lathrop and James Sprague also reached 50 career goals, and Mynderse-Romulus earned its first win behind eight goals from Hunter Kurdziolek. 

LIVONIA-AVON-GENESEO-8 at WAYNE-7 - Livonia-Avon-Geneseo edged Wayne 8-7 in a tournament game Thursday evening, with junior Jack Ackerman scoring the game winner with 11 seconds left to complete a comeback from a 7-5 deficit entering the fourth quarter. The win gives LAG a 3-1 record and evens the all-time series with Wayne at two wins apiece.

For Livonia-Avon-Geneseo (3-1), sophomore Will Schweitzer led with three goals, while eighth-grader Owen Schweitzer added two goals. Junior Rider VanZandt contributed one goal and one assist, and senior Nikolai Hanna picked up two assists. VanZandt went 13-for-18 at the faceoff dot (72%). Senior Ayden Szymanski stopped eight shots for a 53% save percentage in goal.

For Wayne (1-4), senior Tucker Eaton led with four goals, while junior Cody Crandell added two goals and junior Shane Coleman contributed one goal and one assist. MIDLAKES-6 at HONEOYE FALLS-LIMA-14 - Honeoye Falls-Lima picked up a 14-6 non-league win over Midlakes on Thursday evening at home, scoring five goals in the first quarter and five more in the fourth to pull away. The game featured a pair of career milestones for Midlakes, with senior Nate Lathrop and junior James Sprague each reaching 50 career varsity goals in the same game.

For Honeoye Falls-Lima (4-1), senior Jackson Coon led with four goals and five assists, while senior Marco Vengoechea added four goals and junior Austin Schor contributed two goals and two assists, picking up his first varsity assist. Senior Jayden Hillegeer chipped in two goals. Sophomore Benny Feinberg went six-for-eight at the faceoff dot (75%) and senior Ezra Gathercole added five wins in eight attempts (63%). Junior Jason Bennett stopped eight shots for a 57% save percentage in goal.

MYNDERSE-ROMULUS-14 at NEWARK-11 - Mynderse-Romulus Geneva at Waterloopicked up its first win of the season with a 14-11 non-league victory at Newark on Thursday evening, with junior Hunter Kurdziolek putting together an eight-goal performance to lead the way.
For Mynderse-Romulus (1-2), Kurdziolek led with eight goals and three assists, while senior Trace Parish added two goals and four assists and sophomore Owen Levis contributed three assists. Freshman Tyne VanEvery scored three goals, including his first varsity goal. Sophomore Patty Shell reached 100 career saves during the game, stopping eight shots to push his total to 101.

For Geneva (4-0), junior Jacob D'Amico led with four goals, while senior Ryland Dunham added three goals and seventh-grader Nick Mateo Jr contributed three goals, including his first varsity goal. Junior Jack Dunham chipped in two goals and three assists, and senior Ben Budgar added two assists. Mateo Jr also went 11-for-16 at the faceoff dot (69%). Junior Owen Marquart was perfect in goal, stopping five shots for a 100% save percentage in 48 minutes.

THOMAS-9 at MCQUAID JESUIT-10 - McQuaid Jesuit edged Thomas 10-9 in overtime Thursday afternoon at McQuaid, with junior John Burrows scoring the Geneva at Waterloogame winner in OT to improve the Knights to 3-3. The game was tied at nine heading into overtime after Thomas outscored McQuaid three-to-nothing in the third quarter.

For McQuaid Jesuit (3-3), Burrows led with five goals and one assist, including the overtime winner. Senior Domenic Giangreco added two goals and two assists, reaching 50 career varsity goals in the process with 51 total. Senior Joe DiMarco chipped in one goal and one assist, and Dominic Bianchi added one goal and one assist. Giangreco went a perfect 11-for-11 at the faceoff dot (100%). Junior Jackson Paladino stopped 14 shots for a 61% save percentage in 53 minutes.

HILTON-24 at CHURCHVILLE-CHILI-6 - Hilton picked up a 24-6 non-league win at Churchville-Chili on Thursday evening, scoring seven goals in the first quarter and ten more in the second to build a commanding halftime lead. Twelve different players scored for the Cadets, who extended their winning streak against Churchville-Chili to eight straight in a series now standing at 12-11.

For Hilton (6-1), junior Tyler Reger and sophomore Lucas Grizzanti each led with four goals, with Reger adding one assist. Senior Jack Palmer contributed three goals and two assists, junior Gianluca Auriuso added three goals and one assist, and senior Anthony Mitrano Geneva at Waterloochipped in two goals and three assists. Junior Kyle Taddeo added two goals and two assists, and senior Cahlan Smith contributed one goal and four assists. Junior Caden McNeil picked up his first varsity assist. Three faceoff specialists shared duties, with Reger going six-for-eight (75%), Mitrano five-for-seven (71%), and Grizzanti 12-for-19 (63%).

BRIGHTON-14 at PAL-MAC-10 - Brighton picked up a 14-10 non-league win at Pal-Mac on Thursday evening, scoring seven goals in the second quarter to take control after a close first quarter. The win gives Brighton a 2-1 all-time edge against Pal-Mac.

For Brighton (6-1), sophomore Austin Flaum led with four goals and two assists, reaching BH at Whitman50 career varsity goals with 51 total. Haverling stayed competitive throughout but BH at Whitmancould not overcome a three-goal deficit in the final result.

For Haverling (2-4), freshman Mason Rooks led with three goals, while senior Zach Colegrove added one goal and six assists and sophomore Caden Fairbrother and senior Warren McCormick each contributed two goals and one assist. Freshman Mason Calkins added two goals and one assist, picking up his first varsity assist in the process. Senior Drew Spears and junior Logan Force each chipped in one goal.
